A Seaside Retreat

Rehoboth Beach, Delaware

Inspired by the Creole Style architecture in Louisiana that the client had grown to love as a child, this new beach house was designed as a weekend retreat for a large family.  In keeping with the Creole vernacular and to offer the best views of the surrounding marsh, the primary floor is located on the second floor.

Those rooms most used by the family face the rear of the house which opens to a large screened porch with an outdoor kitchen and dining area.  A swimming pool and terrace is raised above grade to catch the view and breezes, but remains beneath the sight lines from the main living rooms above.

The upper floors have 6 bedrooms and a large bunk room centered around a family hallway.  At ground level are a guest suite and play room as well as the family entry and covered parking on a loop drive beneath the screened porch above. By bringing the driveway through the house at the rear we were able to provide both a covered entry area as well as to maximize the parking and circulation on a very small site.

Exterior materials were selected for durability and low maintenance.  The house was planned to be easy to open on a weekend and to close up at the end of the season.

Vibrant colors, bold patterns, and an eclectic mixture of decorative furnishings create a stylish yet livable backdrop for this active family and their friends.
