FOR THE PAST 23 YEARS, Michael Franck and Art Lohsen have worked together with a dedicated and talented team of professionals as Franck & Lohsen Architects Inc. creating architecture in the realms of ecclesiastical, residential, university, and urban design.

It has been a source of great joy to have created timeless buildings enjoyed by a wide-range of people — from students to homeowners to worshippers; and fortunate to have wonderful clients who placed their trust and vision in our hands — including the peer recognition of the Arthur Ross Award for our body of work.

This September, Franck & Lohsen Architects, Inc. will transform into two new entities. Michael will assume the helm of residential, hospitality and university commissions with Michael M. Franck Architect LLC. Art will assume the helm of ecclesiastical commissions with Bella Chiesa LLC. and, as always, Michael and Art will continue to work in a collaborative spirit which has been a hallmark of their firm.

We are excited about this next chapter as we continue to create enduring architecture.

Upchurch University Center

Longwood University

Designed to reinforce the established traditional architecture on campus, this 80,000 square foot building is located in the heart of this historic Virginia university. Housing a multitude of student organizations, campus-wide functions, offices and dining facilities, this state-of-the-art facility is designed to meet the complex needs of students in an environment that is approachable and enjoyable.

Due to the size and complexity of the building and its position on campus, the building’s 4 sides are very different on each façade. The south façade features an circular porch with Greek Doric columns as well as commercial spaces which open on to a large lawn for more relaxed student activities A more intimately scaled façade along Brock Commons, the primary artery of campus, reinforces the high quality of the nearby historic buildings and creates more intimate areas on the exterior. The North facade with a large double story columns opens onto Wheeler Mall echoing the scale and attention to detail found in nearby buildings while helping to frame this important green.
